General Information about the EE program

More than 13,000 students a year enjoy our day and residential environmental education programs. All groups are welcome including public, private, religious, Montessori, homeschool, and scouting groups. We are taking reservations now from schools for field studies for the fall of 2014.

Jekyll Island 4-H Center 2013-14 EE Staff

Belinda Merkelis

Belinda Merkelis is from Calumet City, IL. She attended the University of Miami where she majored in Marine Science and Biology and minored in Chemistry. She enjoys fishing, playing volleyball, and reading. Belinda came to Jekyll to impart her love and knowledge of the ocean and its surrounding ecosystems on young people. Her favorite quote is “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ben LaPoint

Ben LaPoint is from Gansevoort, NY. He attended Paul Smiths College where he majored in Natural Resource Management and Policy. He enjoys ultimate frisbee, plants, cooking, and graphic design.  Ben came to Jekyll because he enjoys the ability to have a positive impact on our youth and open them up to the environment. His favorite quote is “Don’t worry about what if. Worry about what is.”

 

Dana Lynn Thomason

Dana Lynn Thomason is from Edenton, NC. She attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she majored in Marine Biology. She enjoys beach volleyball, reading, snow skiing, white water rafting, and relaxing on the beach. Dana came to Jekyll because she wanted to obtain a comprehensible knowledge on the different ecosystems located along Georgia’s coast. Her favorite quote is “Each Moment…Only Once.”

Elijah O'Cain

Elijah O’Cain is from St. Simons Island, GA. He attended Georgia Southern University where he majored in Biology. He enjoys SCUBA diving, riding bikes, and exploring. Elijah came to Jekyll to help get the next generation of students excited about coastal ecology. His favorite quote is “Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.” – The Grateful Dead

Elizabeth Simko

Elizabeth Simko is from Atlantic, VA. She attended Virginia Tech and majored in Natural Resources Conservation. She enjoys reading, playing the ukulele, and singing. Elizabeth came to Jekyll to teach students by the ocean. Her favorite quote is “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” – JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

 

Jacob Wolfe

Jacob Wolfe is from Watkinsville, GA. He attended the University of Georgia where he majored in Environmental Economics and Management. He enjoys camping, hunting, hiking, sports, and spending time with friends and family. Jacob came to Jekyll to experience the coast and to show kids that nature is awesome. His favorite quote is “Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” – Henry David Thoreau

Kaila Thorn

Kaila Thorn is from Cocoa, FL. She attended Hollins University and majored in Environmental Studies/International Studies and is certified in leadership and outdoor leadership. She enjoys kayaking, hiking, dance, music, learning from those around her, and food. Kaila cam to Jekyll for a chance to learn more about an environment she loves and to share her knowledge and inspire youth. Her favorite quote is “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” – Ghandi

Kirstin Prunchak

Kirstin Prunchak is from Davenport, IA. She attended Iowa State University where she majored in Animal Ecology. She enjoys all things Harry Potter, all things Disney, and animals. Kirstin came to Jekyll to live on the beach and to teach and expand her knowledge about the coast. Her favorite quote is “If you can dream it, you can do it.” – Walt Disney

Lindy Sanderson

Lindy Sanderson is from Moultrie, GA. She attended the University of Georgia where she majored in Biology. She enjoys playing soccer, horseback riding, and reading. Lindy came to Jekyll because she loved the trip she took to Jekyll in 5th grade and she wanted to get kids excited about science. Her favorite quote is “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” – Dr. Seuss

Malloree Holcombe

Malloree Holcombe is from Adairsville, GA. She attended Berry College where she majored in Environmental Science and Geology. She enjoys photography, reading, and hanging with friends and family. Malloree came to Jekyll for a second year to share her knowledge with others by helping to educate the younger generations about the Georgia coast. Her favorite quote is “…and those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” – Nietzsche

Noah Wyatt Noah Wyatt is from Harrison, AR. He attended Arkansas Technical University where he majored in fisheries and Wildlife Biology. He enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, and playing guitar. Noah came to Jekyll to broaden his experiences and learn more about coastal ecosystems. His favorite quote is “Go afield with good attitude with respect for the wildlife you hunt and the forest and fields in which you walk.” – Fred Bear
Stephanie Anos Stephanie Anos is from Ronkonkoma, NY. She attended SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry where she majored in Environmental Science. She enjoys running, biking, cooking, crafting, hiking, traveling, and eating. Stephanie came to Jekyll to gain new experiences while having the opportunity to learn and do what she loves. Her favorite quote is “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” – Gandhi
